What's in store for Apple OS 4.0?
iPhone OS 4.0 is on its way. There have been hints that we'd see the next version of the software that powers the iPhone and iPod Touch soon, and on Monday Apple sent invitations to a media-only preview of the software, inviting us to "get a sneak peek" at iPhone OS 4.0. Apple isn't going to let on what's in the updated iPhone software until then, but there's been some buzz recently about what Apple might have in the works.
When version 4.0 of the software will be available for download still isn't clear. Thursday is likely just an overview of new features, though Apple might give at least a time frame for the software's release. The best guess is that it will coincide with the release of new iPhone hardware, which has happened in late June or early July every year since 2007.
Here are some things we think Apple will introduce with iPhone OS 4.0, and some things we're pretty sure it won't but would make a lot of iPhone and iPod Touch owners really happy if they did.
Multitasking: Some consider it the biggest weaknesses of the iPhone in comparison with its smartphone peers: that Apple limits the ability of applications on the iPhone or iPod Touch to run simultaneously. Currently, you can do some multitasking--listening to music while reading e-mail, or browsing Safari during a voice call--but third-party applications can't do this at all.It sound like this will change soon however. Rumors began floating around last week that Apple is indeed working on multitasking in iPhone OS and could be implemented much the way Expose works on Mac OS. Expose is the feature on Macs in which clicking a certain key or swiping downward on a newer MacBook touch pad shows all the applications currently running and gives the option of toggling through each.
Integrated ads: Apple got into a tug-of-war with Google over AdMob last year--and lost. Apple settled for Quattro Wireless, another mobile advertising company, which it bought in January. Since the purchase, Apple has been mum about its plans for Quattro within Apple, but the event on Thursday could serve as a coming-out party for a new advertising platform that is integrated with the iPhone software development kit.
iPhone Apps for graphic designers, mobile design applications
Many designers – Mac and PC based – have been taken with Apple's iPhone 3G and iPod touch. And ever since Apple opened up its App Store to sell iPhone-based applications, the appeal has grown.
There is no denying that there are many different applications for the iPhone and iPod touch. But how many of these are useful to those of us involved in the creative industry?
Below we feature a few iPhone apps that may be of use to graphic designers and those in creative industries. Some looked to be useful organisational tools, others we thought might help inspire or motivate creativity, whilst others we have included simply because captured our imagination.
Whilst researching this, in many cases we found that there was more than one App which performed a similar function. We have simply listed the ones which appealed to us most. So it may be advisable, when at the iTunes App store, to do a search for similar Apps, as there may be one which is better suited for one purpose over another. It is also, ofcourse, always worth reading the Customer Reviews on iTunes, both positive and negative. What works for one person, may not work for another.

Oblique Strategies was a set of postcards published by Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt, initially in the 1970's. Each card contains a phrase, or suggestion thatmay help to overcome a creative block. This App contains five editions of the cards and can be used on both the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Very simply, Ruler is a… ruler and it's on your iPhone or iPod touch. Works in centimetres and inches and can save your latest measurement.
Palettes is an iPhone App for creating color schemes. With Palettes, it is possible to sample colors from websites, iPhone photo album images or other color schemes. It will import and export color palettes to and from Adobe Photoshop and supports a number of color modes, including RGB, HSV, HSL and CMYK.There is also a Lite version of Palettes, which does not cost anything, but has some features removed (such as importing and exporting palettes from Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro and other programs.
